There are four stages in the complete freeze drying process: pretreatment, freezing, primary drying, and secondary drying. Freeze-drying (blue arrow) brings the system around the triple point, avoiding the direct liquid–gas transition seen in ordinary drying (green arrow). Stages of freeze drying In a typical phase diagram, the boundary between gas and liquid runs from the triple point to the critical point. Freeze-dried coffee was also incorporated by replacing spray-dried coffee in the meal, ready-to-eat category. The new tray rations ( T Rations) have been improved upon by increasing acceptable items and provide high quality meals while in the field. Additional requirements for rations include a minimum shelf life of three years, be deliverable by air, consumable in worldwide environments, and provide a complete nutritional profile. How rations are chosen and developed are based on acceptance, nutrition, wholesomeness, producibility, cost, and sanitation. Military rations have also come a long way, from being served cured pork and corn meal to beefsteaks with mushroom gravy. With the combination of these three innovations, NASA could provide safe and wholesome foods to their crews from freeze-dried meals. Disease-producing bacteria and toxins were reduced by quality control and the development of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) plan, which is widely used today to evaluate food material before, during and after processing. The crumb problem was solved with the addition of a gelatin coating on the foods to lock in and prevent crumbs. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are beneficial in mental and vision development and, as they remain stable during space travel, can provide astronauts with added benefits. The complete nutrient profile was improved with the addition of an algae-based vegetable-like oil to add polyunsaturated fatty acids. As technology and food processing improved, NASA looked for ways to provide a complete nutrient profile while reducing crumbs, disease-producing bacteria, and toxins. What began for astronaut crews as tubed meals and freeze-dried snacks that were difficult to rehydrate, were transformed into hot meals in space by improving the process of rehydrating freeze-dried meals with water. Early uses in food įreeze-dried foods became a major component of astronaut and military rations. In the 1950s–1960s, freeze drying began to be viewed as a multi-purpose tool for both pharmaceuticals and food processing. ![]() The freeze-drying process was developed as a commercial technique that enabled blood plasma and penicillin to be rendered chemically stable and viable without refrigeration. Because of the lack of refrigerated transport, many serum supplies spoiled before reaching their recipients. Ī significant turning point for freeze drying occurred during World War II when blood plasma and penicillin were needed to treat the wounded in the field. No further freeze drying information was documented until Tival in 1927 and Elser in 1934 had patented freeze drying systems with improvements to freezing and condenser steps. Shackell independently created the vacuum chamber by using an electrical pump. Modern freeze drying began as early as 1890 by Richard Altmann who devised a method to freeze dry tissues (either plant or animal), but went virtually unnoticed until the 1930s. The process involved multiple cycles of exposing potatoes to below freezing temperatures on mountain peaks in the Andes during the evening, and squeezing water out and drying them in the sunlight during the day. The Inca were freeze drying potatoes into chuño from the 13th century. Primary applications of freeze drying include biological (e.g., bacteria and yeasts), biomedical (e.g., surgical transplants), food processing (e.g., coffee) and preservation. If the product to be dried is a liquid, as often seen in pharmaceutical applications, the properties of the final product are optimized by the combination of excipients (i.e., inactive ingredients). When solid objects like strawberries are freeze dried the original shape of the product is maintained. īecause of the low temperature used in processing, the rehydrated product retains much of its original qualities. This is in contrast to dehydration by most conventional methods that evaporate water using heat. Freeze-dried ice creamįreeze drying, also known as lyophilization or cryodesiccation, is a low temperature dehydration process that involves freezing the product and lowering pressure, removing the ice by sublimation. Later in 2017, user Barnz posted a discussion thread to the ValveTime forum pointing to the portfolio website of one Moby Francke, an ex-Valve artist who appears to have drafted up some concept characters for a potential Left 4 Dead 3. Later that year, a tutorial posted to Valve’s official developer community website contained an image that referenced a ‘l4d3’ folder before it was swiftly replaced, too. In what appears to be a gaffe on the side of Valve, references to the game (and Half Life 3, for Pete’s sake!) were found in the file directories, which led many to assume that the game was in development. It’s worth checking out this run-through of the leaked content on the ValveTime website if you’d like to know more, which includes a potential Left 4 Dead test map, possibly bound for VR, and containing strings referencing a Moroccan lantern. As well as a “retired engineer” character found in the Left 4 Dead 3 directory, a new Special Infected is also referenced, known as The Nocturnal, whose abilities may have been tied to a day/night cycle, one of the features of the new engine. If we flash-forwards to 2016 we can then address the wonderful investigative sleuthing of Tyler McVicker of Valve News Network, who collected a number of leaks from the Steam VR Performance Tool, which appeared to blow Valve’s entire future development plans wide open via a number of Source 2 files. Unfortunately, for now a new L4D game is not something we’re working on." Left 4 Dead 3 Rumours It’s clear some people are having fun creating misinformation to spin up the community and other outlets. Where this style deck used to struggle with early removal, Fatal Push is a dream come true when compared to Path to Exile or Dismember. Instead the deck works hard to have just the right disruption to slow the opponent down and milk the very efficient two-drops it has, while mercilessly bleeding the opponent with Liliana of the Veil. No Death’s Shadows or Traverse the Ulvenwalds, as is the rage for G/B decks these days. Looking over the decklist, you will first notice that it’s a bit old-fashioned. I beat Jeskai Flash, Abzan Company, Ironworks, Traverse Shadow, and G/B Midrange and lost to Humans, Hollow One, Eldrazi Tron, Jeskai-Breach, and Ad Nauseum. I went 5-5, but found most of my matches satisfying and all of my opponents professional and sporting. I probably made an average of 1 significant mistake per match, and I believe this resulted in one less match win than Reid would’ve had. I don’t mind telling you that, in Magic in general and certainly with this deck, Reid has more skill and endurance than I do. He’d prefer to trade resources, forgo any risky early attempt at a win and give himself a fighting chance in a game that tests both players’ skill and endurance. Reid is known to like his games of Magic to be competitive and attrition-based. I was most attracted to Reid Duke’s Abzan deck, which you may know he top 8’d with (going 8-2-1 with it overall): I felt that all three were totally decent, and certainly not broken. I thus had some practice logged with a few of our other front runners: Madcap Moon, Green Tron and Abzan featuring Dark Confidant. Luckily, I’ve been down enough rabbit holes that I know that such brews often don’t make it from promising to Pro Tour-worthy. But I DID sink a lot of hours in the process. Suffice it to say, that despite (or because of!) reaching for less popular cards like Molten Rain and Small Pox, I did not manage to break the ferocious red god. It’s great in Standard, should lend itself to the speed of Modern, and fits into two already good shells: Burn (or Zoo) and Lilliana of the Veil decks. One card I was keen to break in Modern is Hazoret, the Fervent. Ben Rubin playing for Team Face to Face Games at Pro Tour Ixalan. We rented a very pleasant house on the ridge overlooking Bilbao, bought a lot of groceries, went through a respectable quantity of Nutella and played an obscene amount of Magic.
